spirited away from the dog park

Runway Dog Park, by the airport in South Milwaukee is one of the fully-fenced dog parks that we frequent. I like it because it's got a path for humans to walk, if you go in the morning you can watch the planes taking of, and it's close enough that I can drive to it without falling asleep. I dislike it because there are no trees, many people don't stay with their dogs, and many don't clean up after their dogs.
I now have a new reason to dislike this dog park: Dog owner pleads for pet taken from park. This woman's dog was taken from the park when he was out of her sight.
This has always been one of my fears taking Keeley to dog parks. When he was a puppy, I always kept a really close eye on him because I was worried that he'd get snatched since IT pups are so hard to come by. Now that he's older, it's still a fear of mine since he's so friendly, he'd willingly go off with anyone.
Keeley's pretty good at staying with me, but once in a while he takes off after some dog and leaves me in his dust. I always go running after him. As I'm running past other dog owners, they say things to me like, "Relax, there's a fence around the whole thing so there's no where he can go". They make me feel like I must be nuts to want to keep my dog in sight.
What if he gets hurt? What if he gets into a fight? What if he can't resist temptation and jumps into the mud pit? What if he's doing his business, how can I clean it up if I can't see where he did it? What if someone takes him?
I don't think I'm being nuts, just responsible. This whole story makes me feel more justified than ever for wanting to keep Keeley within my sight at the park.
Here's how it ended up: Luke's 6-week odyssey concludes in a tail-wagging reunion. Turns out some woman took the dog and gave him to her sister's family as a Christmas present! What kind of a person takes a dog that doesn't belong to them from a dog park? I wonder how this woman thought the dog got inside of the fully fenced park if his owner wasn't there with him? She claims that she thought she was helping the dog, but if that were true, shouldn't she have put up "FOUND DOG" fliers with her number at the park?

Keeley is lucky to have you! It's obvious you care what he's doing at all times and that's as it should be! Too bad not everyone feels the same way you do!
What a scary thing to have happen to Luke and his family! We're sure glad this story has a happy ending!

Love ya lots,
Maggie and Mitch

We hear ya.

Mom and dad used to take me to the Silverlake dog park all the time and there always seemed to be some sort of trouble. People bringing little dogs into the big dog area, strange people wandering into the park, dogs fighting, people not picking up poop, I could go on and on. And I caught a nasty case of hookworm from the park.

My mama says that your mama is right - we won't be going to any dog parks again after having lots of problems - and to not feel bad for feeling that way!

Love,
Bogart

Hey Keeley, my mom totally agrees with yours. It's the responsible thing to do to keep an eye on the dog. We're mischievous after all, right?
You're in Wisconsin, right? Don't forget to vote today! :)

Keeley, your mom is a very responsible pet parent! Too bad there are always some idiots that just let their dogs run wild. We are sure glad Luke's story had a happy ending, but it's disgusting that it had to happen at all. Who did that woman think she was kidding? Dogs don't go to the dog park alone! Gimme a break!

Thankfully that story ended happily. What goes on in some people's head I wonder??????? It makes me so angry that you can't just go to the dog park and enjoy watching your dog having fun because some stupid ignorant person will go ahead and ruin it.
No wonder you watch Keeley with eagle eyes...don't worry about what other people say, you just do what's right for you and Keeley.

Hi Keeley!

We go to the fenced-in dog park in Grafton all the time, nearly every day of the week. I remember around Christmas-time seeing a flier about Luke posted at our park. Reading it was heartbreaking but we never knew the happy outcome until we read your post!

The Grafton dog park (Muttland Meadows) is our favorite park. First, it's fenced but mostly because we see a lot of the same people and pups there all the time so it's like a little community if you are a regular. We went to the airport park once and didn't like it at all. It was boring because there were no pretty trees and everyone was a stranger!

Grafton is quite far away but worth the drive for us to have off-leash time!

Thank you so much for the invite to your pawty! We have a friend from NY coming to visit that week and need to double-check when he arrives before we can say "yes" for sure. :)

Licks and wags,
Marvin and Diesel

I should say though there was one time we were at Grafton and I lost sight of Diesel for quite a long time. I actually started to feel panicked and begged Marvin, who was by my side, to use his beagle nose to help me find him. I ran around asking if people had seen him. Some had and some said no. It WAS terrifying because I kept thinking someone may have taken him. Finally I found him sniffing in the trees and I was nearly in tears as I hugged him. Diesel gets pretty scared when he can't find me for a while too so at least he knew how I felt ;)

So I definitely DO know what you mean about worrying! Most of the time now we stick pretty close together at the park because we've been doing training and recalls there ... so they know I have treats!

Take care,
Jackie, the beagle dog mum
